Donald, could you briefly introduce yourself to our readers please.

I am a Master Consulting Hypnotist, NLP Practitioner, Reiki Master, Certified Hypnosis Instructor and currently I am studying psychotherapy and sound healing.

I have been in practice since 2002 and I have a busy practice in downtown Toronto, ON. I am an audio producer and have recorded over 30 hypnosis programs on a variety of topics.

I also write music for hypnosis and have produced around 20 musical albums for hypnosis. I currently divide my time between my private practice and Helix Healthcare Group, a clinic for mental health and addiction in Toronto. I also teach hypnosis.

What first attracted you to a career in Hypnosis?

I always knew that I wanted to help empower others on their life’s journey. I was first attracted to a career in hypnosis after I received three sessions from a hypnotist in Toronto.

I was working in investment banking at the time and I was stressed out, unhappy and feeling stuck. After just 3 sessions my life was on a new trajectory. I was more calm, my confidence levels were higher and I feeling happier that I had felt in a long, long time.

I knew that I wanted to guide others to experience the same, profound changes that I did.

Have you experienced any personal benefits from using hypnosis for yourself that you would care to share with our readers?

I have experienced many benefits from using both hypnosis and self-hypnosis. In fact, I have experienced so many benefits from hypnosis that I don’t know what my life would be like without it!

Hypnosis allowed me to release old feelings, programs and patterns that were keeping me stuck. It also helped me to become confident, calm, motivated and capable. It has empowered me to fine tune my mind to become more clear in my thinking.

As a result of this I have become more focused which has enabled me to reach my goals. I always look forward to my daily self-hypnosis practice. It feels so good! Its like a mental holiday that relaxes and rejuvenates all parts of my mind, body and spirit.

Donald, I know that your clients speak highly of the work you do with them. Tell us, What issues do your clients typically come to you for help with?

Clients come in with a variety of issues at the clinic. I work with low self-esteem, procrastination, addictions and people who feel stuck in life and are working to move forward.

The majority of my work with clients is focusing on the early, developmental phase of life. Every problem has its origin in the past. Using regression we uncover the root cause of a problem or issue and work to release and correct it at the cause.

I also do a lot of spiritual/metaphysical work. Many clients come into the clinic for past life regression or life between lives work as well as assisting people to reconnect to their higher self, balance their chakras or soul retrieval work.

Do you specialize in helping people with certain issues?

I work with people who are stuck in life and trying to move forward. By accessing the subconscious mind we can begin to understand what is blocking their progress and working together we can release the block so they can begin moving forwards.

I know that you use a Transpersonal approach in your hypnosis work with some clients. Can you tell us a little more about that and how it is helpful for people.

We know that we are so much more than just a physical body. We also have a mind and spirit or energy system. Transpersonal means the crossing or merging of the mind, body and spirit.

Transpersonal work with hypnosis allows us to work with the deepest parts of the mind, body and spirit. Through the vehicle of hypnosis we can scan the entire system and pinpoint and locate if a problem resides at a mind level, a body level or a spiritual level.

Then using a variety of hypnosis techniques we can release and correct the problem by working directly at that level.

The main goal of transpersonal hypnosis is to bring the mind, body and spirit back into alignment with one another. It is through this alignment that homeostatic balance can be achieved.

From a hypnotist's point of view, can you tell us about some of the teachers who have influenced your approach to hypnosis the most?

Georgina Cannon was my instructor and mentor. She has had the most influence on my approach. I am truly grateful to have had her as a guide and teacher.

She taught me how to perform hypnotism skillfully and effectively while applying the highest level of ethics possible.

Dr. Will Horton and his approach to NLP was highly beneficial. The way that he teaches NLP makes it highly approachable and very, very practical.

The techniques that he teaches are immediately usable and empower clients to facilitate lasting change.

Do you find any particular phase of your hypnosis work to be of special interest to you? e.g. one on one sessions, training hypnotists, writing scripts, producing recordings.

I love all of the phases that you listed above. Each phase is a wonderful change of pace and is a pleasure in its own way.

I enjoy teaching and training because I learn so much from the process of teaching others.

I am very fond of one on one sessions because empowering others to make change is very rewarding work.

Writing scripts, producing recordings, creating podcasts and youtube videos because it allows my creativity to flourish. It's wonderful to be able to do something different everyday.

What are the three most important bits of advice would you give a client before their first session of hypnosis?

  1. Set a clear intention as to what you want to achieve using hypnosis.
  2. Have an open mind.
  3. Realize that your participation is required when using hypnosis. It is a co-creation between you and your hypnotherapist. Your hypnotherapist/hypnotist may make recommendations or give homework and it is important to follow their instructions in order to make change.
If you could give potential and beginning hypnotists at least one piece of advice, what would it be?

My advice would be to learn from as many people as possible. It gives you different perspectives and approaches.

Read as many books as you can on hypnosis, watch videos, attend lectures and conferences.

Most importantly to remember that mastery comes through practice. So practice with every opportunity that you get!

What is the most frequent misunderstanding about hypnosis that you encounter with clients or the public?

The most frequent misunderstanding is that hypnosis is an unconscious state and that you won’t remember what happened when you emerge from hypnosis.

Someone that is in hypnosis remembers everything that happens during session as hypnosis is similar to daydreaming. The client is still fully aware, but there attention is focused inwardly as opposed to the world around them.

As we both know, Hypnosis as a healing and helping modality has existed for hundreds of years now. However, it is more widely known and accepted in some areas than in others. How would you rate the public acceptance of hypnosis/hypnotherapy in your region?

I have been in practice for 14 years and I have seen the acceptance of hypnosis grow in my time as a consulting hypnotist. Toronto has an extremely high level of acceptance for hypnosis.

It continues to gain notoriety and acceptance each year. If you were to mention hypnosis to someone in Toronto chances are they have seen a hypnotist themselves or they know someone that has used it to make change.

On top of my private practice, I also work for Helix Healthcare Group, a clinic for mental health and addiction.

At Helix I work along side psychologists, psychotherapists, doctors and mental health practitioners integrating hypnosis into the clients wellness program. This is a very wonderful development and shows the progression that our profession has made.

Its wonderful to see that hypnosis has received a level of acceptance that it is being used in conjunction with psychotherapy and psychology.

What would your favourite book on hypnosis be that you would recommend to others?

Just one? I would recommend Finding True Magic By Jack Elias. Its an excellent book and covers a variety of techniques that work beautifully. The scripts that are provided in the book are very powerful.

Is there anything else that you would like to expand upon or add that we have not covered?

If anyone has questions they can feel free to contact me directly!
