These
are some of the things that Hypnotherapy makes possible. This page looks
at how Hypnotherapy works to promote changes in us.
Hypnotherapy is the use of a set of techniques that promote
personal change while the person wanting to make those changes is in Hypnosis.
Negative Mind Programming
Most of us have managed to pick up some form of negative mind
programming as we go through life, particularly during our childhood
years. This is due to one of several reasons. For
example, simple remarks made by authority figures such as parents,
teachers, older siblings etc. can often form a long lasting negative
belief about ourselves or the way the world is. It is not uncommon that
these beliefs will be carried by us for a long time.
In fact, they can shape the very way we experience the
rest of our life if we do not find a way of correcting them. You may
recognize the type of remarks that can lead to lasting negative effects.
Some typical examples would be, "he's no good at maths," "she can never
make up her mind," "nice girls don't get angry," "boys don't cry,"
or "clean up your plate like a good girl," etc.
Once stored in our Subconscious Mind as a belief they become the
source of negative self-talk that sabotages our efforts to achieve or make
important changes in our life.
"Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their
own minds...."
Franklin D. Roosevelt, U.S. President
Imagine that you are able to easily eliminate any
negative mind programming you may have swirling around in your head.
Mind programming or self-talk that consistently defeats you in the
achievement of your goals or enjoyment of good health and relaxation.
Now imagine being able to replace it with a positive program
that automatically promotes your good health and success all day and every day.
That is what Hypnotherapy makes possible.
Bad Habits
Others of us may have developed habits, such as too much
eating, smoking, shopping, working etc. or nail biting teeth grinding
etc. that we want to break. In Hypnotherapy we go directly to the
source of these habits (our Subconscious Mind) to permanently change
them.
Just think of the many ways in which you could finally start to
improve your life. The goals you could finally achieve, the time you would save,
the relief you would experience and the pride you and others would now take in
yourself if you made the change you want.
"The purpose of hypnosis as a therapeutic technique is to
help you understand and gain more control over your behaviour, emotions or
physical well-being"
-The Mayo Clinic, 12/03
Natural Self-Healing
Hypnotherapy techniques also release the power of your
mind-body's natural self-healing processes and enable you to start
performing at your best all the time. And the good news is that
you can probably do it in a lot less time than you might think.
Many successful athletes, business people and students have already
discovered that Hypnotherapy is the key to achieving what they want out
of life. They are already enjoying the benefits and do not settle
for less. I know I certainly won't.
Now increasing numbers of ordinary people of all ages and from many different
walks of life are also successfully improving their lives through hypnosis.
Be assured that anyone of normal intelligence can learn from their success and
take advantage of the life-enhancing opportunities that Hypnotherapy can provide
you with.
Your Subconscious Mind
Your beliefs about how the world works and what you can and can
not personally achieve are created and stored in your Inner or Subconscious Mind. Also created and stored in your Subconscious Mind is every
one of your behavioural and mental habits and emotions.
It is your beliefs and emotions that are the source of
all the "inner" or "self" talk that you hear when you start off to make
a positive change, break a habit, or worry etc.. The reality is
that without making changes to the habits or beliefs stored in your
Subconscious Mind you are unlikely to achieve lasting positive change or
consistently exceed your current performance levels.
Part of the reason why Hypnotherapy works so effectively is that
it enables direct communication with your Inner or Subconscious Mind. That is
something that is hard to do in our "conscious" everyday awareness state.
".....today it's [hypnosis] considered a respected
therapeutic tool, a well-established method of reaching the Subconscious Mind."
Connie Chung
- Eye-to-Eye, 12/94
Many of the habits and beliefs you have developed are
good and help you get through life more effectively and efficiently.
For example, automatically looking both ways before you cross a street
or accepting that Gravity exists even though you can not see, taste or
touch it.
On the other hand, a belief that you are somehow "not
good enough" or a habit like grinding your teeth at night you may
desperately want to change. Whether you consider your habits and
beliefs helpful or limiting, one thing they all have in common is their
resistance to change.
This is because while you are in your everyday
"conscious mode" of thinking you naturally filter out data and
experiences that do not reinforce your existing habits and beliefs.
This is how your mind deals with the overwhelming amount of stimuli
(visual, auditory, feel, smells etc.) that bombard you during every
waking moment. If it didn't you would never even get out of the
house each morning for all the conscious mental processing you would
have to do first. The filtering feature originally evolved then to
help you function effectively.
Filtering Effect
The filtering effect however, is also what makes it
hard, if not impossible, to permanently change your habit and
beliefs. Time and again each of us have all experienced the
reality that the programs stored in our Subconscious Mind dominate our
thoughts and actions. If not, why are we all not just deciding to be at
our perfect weight, play our ideal golf stroke every time or recall
everything we have studied the night before?
The good news is that while in a state of hypnosis you
are given the opportunity to turn off this filter to your Subconscious
Mind. When this happens your Subconscious Mind can then accept the
positive suggestions that you choose.
Accepting only the suggestions that you
approve of in a Hypnotherapy session enables you to reprogram your
Subconscious Mind. How best to communicate with our Subconscious
Mind to change habits and beliefs is explained more fully in the free

In Hypnotherapy you have access to a proven, safe method to break old habits and beliefs and establish the new ones you want. It is then, and only then, that you are on your way to making the permanent positive changes you want in your life and achieving the level of success that you desire.
".......hypnosis is not mind control. It's a naturally occurring state of concentration; It's actually a means of enhancing your control over both your mind and your body." Dr. David Spiegel, Assoc. Chair of Psychiatry Stanford University School of Medicine - Jane Pauley Show, 9/04
Eliminate Struggle
Please note that it is true that Hypnotherapy can significantly reduce or eliminate the struggle, disappointments, and frustrations that you would otherwise typically experience when trying to improve your health or achieve your goals without it. However, for the process to work, you must first genuinely want to make the change for yourself - not because others asked you to or it is something you think you "should" do.
Secondly, you must be prepared to take action to make the desired change happen. I am sorry to report that there are no magic bullets for the lazily inclined! However, through Hypnotherapy you can experience a sense of motivation to act to a degree that in all likelihood you have not experienced before.
